Thirteen Million children in Philippines live in Poverty

UNICEF reports that 44% of the children in Philippines live in poverty. The greatest number by percent, 69% live in Mindanao, 820,000!! Pray for these kids who suffer from lack of food, shelter, education, and clean water.

The church of Jesus Christ in Charlotte purchased Pepito a motorcycle. He had been in a traffic accident and broke his leg and could not work. Now he can travel to minister in the various churches and also hire the motorcycle out like a taxi and earn enough money to buy rice to feed his family.
In this video he is thanking everyone for the motorcycle. He is speaking cebuano but you can still understand the emotion of thanks and our names. Please click Pepito to view the video.

Journalist Killed

Another Journalist was killed. This one in Davao Oriental province in the town of Manay. He was a broadcaster. The country is still in shock over the political murder of 65, many journalists, last year. Continue to pray for peace in Mindanao and for President Aquino as he takes control of the government.

Abu Sayyaf Kills Three More Kidnap Victims

The Mindanao Examiner is reporting that the Abu Sayyaff has killed three more Philippinos. They were kidnapped by the group on May 27 and held for 3 million pesos ransom. The group is connected with al-Qaeda and has been hunted for many years. Their numbers have been estimated to be about 400 but that was prior to a camp being captured and about 40 members were killed. The group responsible for the latest killings are led by Puruji Indama. The three latest victims are, Claudio Mananita, Rolando Francisco and Dariel Quintella. For complete details link to the story HERE.

Abu Sayyaf Camp Captured.

An Abu Sayyaf camp was captured by the PHP army on Friday. The camp was being defended by about 50 fighters, of the estimated 450 Abu Sayyaf terroritst, and the aid of terrorists Radulan Sahiron was confirmed killed. It was not confirmed if Sahiron was killed, he has a $1M reward for his capture issued by the US. Please pray for peace in Mindanao and a lasting solution to the questions of Muslim autonomy. 189 Charged with Murder, It may be the Biggest Murder Trial in History

Abu Sayaff terrorist training and bomb making camp captured.

Huge news from the Philippines, the military found a camp used by the Abu Sayaff, a terrorist group, to and build bombs. The Abu Sayaff has about 400 members and have conducted terrroists activites throughout the Philippines including kidnapping for ransom.

The Washington Post is reporting that Albader Parad was killed by Philippine troops on Sunday, Click HERE for the news story. He is reported to have been a major leader in the Abu Sayaff and the groups spokesman. He was on the US State Dept. list of terrorists and was involved in the kidnappings of members of the Red Cross last year. He was killed on the island of Jolo an Abu Sayaff stonghold and the center of the groups operations, they have been using terror tactics to try to win Muslim independence from the Philippine government.

Please pray for peace in Jolo, Mindanao and the whole of the Philippines. The Malaysian's are tying to broker a peace deal before the coming elections in the Philippines in May. Please pray that the Kingdom of God be advanced. And that the Lord's will be done in the negoatitions and elections.

Feburary, 21, 2010 Wendell Fertig

Wendell Fertig was an engineer and was living in Mindanao at the time of the Japanese occupation of the Philippines. The Americans surrendered the Philippines to the Japanese, only later to come back and assist in the liberation of the county, landing first in Leyete.

When Fertig decided not to surrender to the Japanese, he lead a guerrilla group of Filipinos in a resistance. Always outnumbered and never enough supplies he never waivered in his determination.

Fertig said,

I am called on to lead a resistance movement against an implacable enemy under conditions that make victory barely possible even under the best circumstances. But I feel that I am indeed a Man of Destiny, that my course is charted and that only success lies at the end of the trail. I do not envision failure; it is obvious that the odds are against us and we will not consistently win, but if we are to win only part of the time and gain a little each time, in the end we will be successful.[2]

We as people in the Army of God should have that same determination and zeal to conquer the territory occupied by the enemies of God. And like Caleb asked of Moses, "Give me this mountain!"

Pages 12-13 How God sent John G Lake to Africa.

.......We left Indianapolies the first day of April, 1908, my wife and self and seven children and four others. We had our tickets to Africa but no money for personal expenses in route except $1.50...(at this point in the narrative Dr. Lake relates several remarkable Providences of God Which supplied their expenses n route.).

Throughout my knowledge of the immigration laws of south Africa, i know that before we would be permitted to land, I must show the immigration inspector that I was possessor of at least $125.00. We prayed earnestly over this matter, and about the time we reached the equator a rest came into my soul concerning it. I could pray no more.

About eight or ten days later we arrived in Cape Town Harbor, and our ship anchored. The immigration inspector came on board and the passengers lined up at the purser's office to present their money and receive their tickets to land. My wife said, "What are you going to do?" I said, "I am going to line up with the rest. We have obeyed God thus far. It is now up to the Lord. If they send us back we cannot help it."

As I stood in line awaiting my turn, a fellow passenger touched me on the shoulder and indicated to me to step out of the line, and come over to the ship's rail to speak with him. He asked some questions, and then drew from his pocket a traveler's checkbook, and handed me tow money orders aggregating $200.00. I stepped back into line, presented my orders to the inspector, and received our tickets to land.

Johannesbourg is one thousand miles inland from Cape Town. Throughout the voyage and on the train we earnestly prayed about the subject of a home. We were faith missionaries. We had neither a Board nor friends behind us to furnish money. We were dependent on God. Many times during the trip to Johnanesburg we bowed our heads and reminded god that when we arrived there, we would need a home. God blessed and wondrously answered our prayer.

Upon our arrival at Johannesburg I observed a little woman bustling up. She said, "You are an American missionary party? " The reply was, "Yes." Addressing me she said, "How many are there in your family?" I answered, "My wife, myself and seven children." "O," she said, "you are the family. The Lord has sent me to meet you, and I want to give you a home."

That same afternoon we were living in a furnished cottage in the suburbs, the property of our beloved benefactor, Mrs. C. L. Goodenough , of Johannesburg, who remains to this day our beloved friend and fellow worker in the Lord. She is now a resident of Forida and has visited us in the West.

January 19, 2010 Nationbuilding as a Way of Combating Terrorism

The US and the Philippine Army have been working jointly since 9/11 in the Philippines to end the terror caused by the Abu Sayyaf. The group has been responsible to terror attacks all over the Philppines, including bombings and kidnappings. The group is said to only have about 400 members. They are increasingly using more and more sophisticated methods to try to find the hideouts of the remaining terrorist targets. Ulitmately, it will take the cooperation of the local population to completely end the groups activity. That cooperation will be won by nationbuilding. This is one area of assistance that the US has engaged. The following quote is taken from the article found HERE.

This task has spurred US troops to build schools, dig wells, and build roads, while helping the Philippine military to roll out its own projects. The location of projects is guided by intelligence reports on where militants are dug in, so that troops can move in and try to win over villagers in the area.

It was just such a construction project, the builiding of a bridge, that was blown up by the Abu Sayyaf a few months ago that tragiclly killed two US marines.

Pray for peace in this impoverished region and for the coming elections in May, that the will of the Lord will be done to advance the kingdom of God.

An earthquake of similar strenght and destructive force could happen in Philippines according Dr. Jane Punongbayan of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology stating that, "it is not a matter of if, but when." She predicts an estimated 34,000 dead

The Philippines sits on what is called the "pacific ring of fire." And there is an earthquake every few days somewhere in the Philippines. There are 10 million people living in Manila and about 90 million people in the whole country. Some in the Philippines are trying to prepare for the disaster but with the poverty they have to deal with everyday an unforseen disaster does not take priority.

January 15, 2010 Philippines a dangerous country for Journalists

With the murder of over 30 journalists in the Novemeber 23 massacre by the accused Andal Ampatuan Jr. whose family controls the politics of the Maguindanao Province. They are loyal to the current president and have delivered blocks of votes in each of the recent national elections.

Esmael Mangudadatu, was running in opposition to the Ampatuan family and his wife was on going to register him as a candidate when she, supporters and over 30 journalists were murdered, 67 people in all. This occured in the Western part of Mindanao. It made the Philppines the most dangerous country in the world for journalists.

The Phlippine elections are coming May of this year and much prayer is needed. The Philippines is listed as being a country subject to nepotism, bribes and unethical practices. However, with the coming elections there is hope of electing leaders who are committed to bringing peace and prosperity to the people. There are many candidates running and it is a crucial time for the country. The country has imposed a ban on guns until the elections are over and already have detained over 70 people on weapons charges. In December the was a mass murder of 67 people, all politically motivated.

Please pray for the peaceful transtition of power and for the persons to be elected who shall most advance the Kingdom of God..

Janurary 13, 2010 Development Continues in Mindanao Despite Terrorism

Ayala Land has announced an investment of 4.5 Billion pesos in construction of the largest mall in Mindanao in Cagayan De Oro. The development has already been aproved by the city of Cagayan. The mall will rival a similar project in Davao city. Constantino Jaraula, the mayor of Cagayan said the mall will be a destination for all of Mindanao and will be in the heart of the city. He thinks that the mall will highlight Cagayan has a "haven" for investment. Click here.

When I was in Cagayan I walked the streets in the heart of the city. There is a large market one block from the Jollibee. Any American visting Mindanao will probably end up at the Jollibee at some point. They serve the closest thing to an American Hamburger in Mindanao, however there are sevearl resturants like McDonalds who also serve a burger. In the mall closest to the Cagayan Airport, there is a Pizza Hut. I really wanted to eat there, not for the Pizza but for the fresh vegatables on the Salad bar, but instead it was decided by my companions to eat at a chicken resturant. I had two pieces of dark meat chicken with rice, the young man taking the order offered "garlic rice" but his accent was so thick that in the noise of the resturant I thought he said "garlic fries." I was so excited to get a treat of garlic french fries! But when the order arrived at our table I saw the rice!
Just outside of the restaurant was a kiosk selling Christian music. While my companions ate I decided to check it out. By far the most CD's were of Praise and Worship leader Don Moen. The Philippinos love to sing Praise Music.

In the heart of the city where the mall is going to be built there were many shops and street vendors. On one street, near the Jollibee, live animals were being sold, along with much fruit and vegatables.

Janurary 11, 2010 Possible Malaysian Connection to bombing in Jolo

A Catholic church was firebombed in Jolo, this was probably the work of the terrorist group, Abu Sayyaf. In this incident the Fr. and the alter boy were the only two poeple there at the moment. The church had been firebombed before and a priest was killed HERE. However, this firebombing may be connected to a Supreme Court ruling in Malaysia allowing the use of the word "Allah" to refer to the Christian God by a Catholic publication. According to Jihad Watch CLICK HERE, the Supreme Court suspended the ruling in an effort to calm the Muslims who have firebombed several churches. There have been four or more, depending on the news reports, of firebombings in Malaysia, believed to be realated to a court decision. Jihad Watch HERE reports that the 10% Christian poplation have used the word for many years and this is an excuse for the Muslim extremists to rally a protest. Most of the Christians in Malaysia are Chinese or Indian, however it is a Malay language publiction by the Catholic Church that is being protested. Several Catholic churches have been firebombed and at least one Pentecostal church was gutted. According to the Jihad Watch the word "Allah" is used by Christians in other Mulism countires, like Egypt, to refer to the Christian God.

Pray that this violence does not spread to Jolo and other parts of Mindanao.

The head of the Western Mindanao Command (Wesmincom) of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, Maj. Gen. Benjamin Dolorfino, said that the Abu Sayyaf is on a recuiting campaign. Its total members are about 400. They are only down a few in number over the course of the last year. The commander stated that the stratagey to defeat the terrorist group will be to take out the leadership, he named several targets of the army. The mayor of Valencia City in Mindanao announed that they would be building a building to house the street markets, click here. The old market burned over a year ago and the temporary structures also burned on December 27. Hopefully the new buildings will give stabilty to the local economy. I met Mayor on my trip to Valencia and wrote about the meeting HERE. He impressed me as being a very intelligent man, well educated and very progressive. His desire is to increase the standard of living for his people.

The US Ambassador to the Philippines writes on her blog HERE that her term is coming to an end. The ambassador served the Philippines for 4 years.

She writes about Mindanao, "My memories of the past four years are as diverse as the Philippines themselves. I will never forget the rich cultures of Mindanao or the proud traditions of the Ifugao. "

She will be succeeded by the nominated Harry Thomas, still awaiting confirmation from the US Senate.
Harry Thomas was US ambassador to Bangladesh and served in other positions in various embassies.

Because of a desire to write about something on a lite note..The first amusement park opened in Mindanao click here.

The theme park has 35 rides, including bumper cars, and a ferris wheel. This is a first for Mindanao. And I was surprised that it was not in Davao, or General Santos but in Dapitan. Dapitan is located on a penisula like tip of the north west part of the island. It is known as the "shrine" city and the place where Jose Rizal was exiled HERE.

In Mindanao, in addition to the terrorist group Abu Sayaf, there is the communist guerrillas group known as the NPA (New Peoples Army). They have targeted killings for some time in Mindanao. Last year the group killed 83 people, 4 in the last week of December. The army published a story saying the group it increasing its attacks in Southern Mindanao, Click HERE.

The PhilStar is reporting that population in the Philippine population will reach 94 million, with a birth rate of two million babies annually. The ideal birth rate should be less than 1% to match the economic groweth rate. It is not uncommon for a Philippine family to have 6, 8, or 10 children or more. Many are influenced by the Catholic church and do not practice birth control, other than natural means. Even the RP government has not passed a measure to help control the population groweth, apperantely influenced by the Catholic church. Link to the news report click HERE. .

This makes if very hard for the Philippinos to feed their families. There are so many unwanted children, that many are given away or abandoned to the streets. Children have no way to care for themselves and many turn to prostitution.

From an economic standpoint, comparing the cost of labor in the Philippines to the US, the labor is very cheap in the Philippines. In every shop there are two or three people doing the same job, and 15 people in line for a job.

94 million people presents a great missionary challenge. Most of the churches in the Philippines are Catholic or SDA. There are precious few who are preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ as I have presented in the Philippines; that he is God himself manifest in the flesh. The Philippines are wide open for the gospel. There is such need for 94 million people to hear that "Jesus Chirst is the same, yesterday, today and forever."

The new year is here! We have been blessed in 2009 and will be abundantly blessed in 2010. There is much to be thankful for and much to pray for. Greater things will be done for the kingdom in 2010, more than we have ever done before, by the grace of God. We bless him for the new year, and bless his name, Jesus Christ. He is the one who forgave my sins, heals my body, lets me walk in blessings, there is not destruction or ruin in my future. But I will walk in the love of the Lord and have his "tender mercy."

The mayon volcano has been spewing lava and ash for several days. It has erupted about 50 times in the past 400 years. It is sad that up to 50,000 people have been evacutatd and are living with relatives or in evacuation centers. This has got to be an impossible living situtation for many, hardest on the children. Please pray for the poor people who have been evacuated.

The volcano does not threaten the people of Mindanao. It lies to the North in Luszon.

December 30, 2009 Earthquake Hits Mindanao

There was another earthquake in Mindanao on Wednesday (the US is 13 hours behind the Philippines) after having three tremors over the weekend. It was estimated to be a 5.5 centered off the coast of Mindanao nearst to Davao (see map, the earthquake is one of the three blue squares to the south. For the news report of the earthquake click HERE. .

Mindanao frequently has earthquakes off their coast. The attached map from Google Earth shows recent Earthquakes in the red squares.

Please take a moment to meet Pastor Winston Capilitan. He is poised to lead the Church of Jesus Christ in the Philippines. We have sevaral churches in fellowship, with more desiring to enter into the fellowship. The main church is in Iligan City. Others in; Initao, in jungle area outside of Initao, Cagayan De Oro, Bohol, Plauridel and other places. There is much hunger for the Word of God on the whole island of Mindanao. Sadly, most missionaries are scared to travel in Mindanao because of the terrorism of the Abu Sayaf and communists fighters. Much of the island is not evangelized by the gospel. Many people have only heard the gospel preached thrru the Catholic doctrines. Last September I was in several areas where it was reported that there never had been a "white" missionary!! How can America hear the gospel week after week and time after time, until all the people of Mindanao have heard it for the first time! There are areas of the Philippines where the name of Jesus Christ is not known in power. How can they know unless God raises up a preacher. Winston Capilitan is such a man.....

Here is a brief bio written by Pastor Winston's wife Flor Capilitan:

"Winston Godito Capilitan was born on August 15,1966 at Glan, Cotabato,Philippines. He is the third child of the six children in the family. Married to sis.Flor I. Capilitan on August 4,1990. He has only one son name Samuel born on September 20,2009.He studied at the University of the Visayas but did not finish high school. He is good in painting and charcoal portrait which is the source of his living. Attended the short term Bible school in Baybay, Leyte, Philippines. At the age of sixteen he started preaching the gospel. Traveled different places in Visayas with his father.He visited different churches and help the pastors in preaching the gospel.

He reached Mindanao work again in the The Church of Jesus Christ. Many religious sect offered him a support in exchange of working with them but the doctrine is different so he refuses.

Being the favorite child of his father and in line of the work he reached Iligan City with his wife Sis.Flor
seeking for a living.Sis. Flor was accepted as a regular permanent teacher in the Bureau of Public

Elementary Schools of the Republic of the Philippines.He handled a church under the organization of the Church of Jesus Christ in Iligan City for 13 years.

He envision that The Church of Jesus Christ will grow in Progress and spread not only in the island of Mindanao but to the entire Philippines."

December, 27 2009 Hillsdale Students help Orphans

Students in Hillsdale college taught principals of free enterprise to the childern of a Philippine orphange, click HERE. This type of work is so needed in the Philippines. Because of the extreme poverty of the people, many children are abandoned by their parents, they simply cannot afford to feed and care for their children. Also, many of the men die while their children are small and when the mothers remarry there is extreme pressure on the to abandon their children from their first marriage, the new husband cannot support all the children involved. When I was in the Philippines I actually met sevearl children who had been abandoned or those who had a father die and their mother and step father could not longer care for them.

A Charlotte NC church, Mecklenburg Community Church, pastored by James Emery White, is soon to purchase a safe house in the Philippines to rescue girls traped in the slave sex trade. The church is the first one in the United States to open such a place in the Philippines.

In a related story, a 67 year old, Donald Mathias of Davie FL, received 20 years for traveling to the Philppines to have sexual relations with two minor girls. He admitted to having made two trips to the Philippines, he was arrested on the second journey. He paid the mother who allowed him to have sex with her two daughters. It is hard to imagine a mother who would do such a thing, but the extreme poverty of the region, where starvation and malnutrion is common, will drive people to extreme measures. Thru a contact I have in the Philippines I heard of a 4 year old girl who was dumped in the street markets area with her birth certificate in hand, the family could no longer care for the little girl.

Please pray for these young women and men who are caught in the sex trade, most not by choice. They are doing the only thing they can do to survive. Unemployment and other ways to make money are just not enough to supply the basic needs. One young person was working the sex trade to pay for their sibilings educations....so the "sisters would have a better life."

Please keep these teenagers in your prayers and pray for the Charlotte Church and they do their best to help these young girls.

The Philippine Daily Enquirer reports that Datu Unsay Mayor Andal Ampatuan was mobbed by journalists and others when he appeared in court wanted as a primary suspect in the political murder of 57 people. He is next due in court on Dec. 28, he is said to be the one who directed the killings and caches of weapons have been found on his families land. The report is found HERE.

The US ambassador to the Philippines is Kristie Kenny. She writes on her blog, HERE. that she visited the Jolo airport and along with the Philippine President dedicated a new runway. This is a triumph over the terrorism that is continuing to plague the island. The Muslim Abu Sayaf has bombed new construction of bridges and roads in an effort to stop the movement of troops.

A major arrest occured yesterday in the Philppines. An Interpole arrest warrent for Abdul Basir Latip, indicted by the United States for his role the kidnapping of a missionary, Charles Walton, who was working in Jolo. For a link to the story click HERE. Latip was arrested at the Manila Airport upon his arrival from Jakarta. The US State Dept. had issued a 1.5M reward for his capture. Many of the Abu Sayaf, estimated to be a group of about 400, are active on the island of Jolo.

Peptio and Pastor Winston Capilitan

In an earlier post I tell my story of how I met Pepito and his stand for the gospel of Jesus Chirst, HERE.

We have learned more about his family. He is the son-in-law of Pastor Saluna. He and his wife have 4 children. They struggle to feed their children because of Pepito's injuries when he was hit by the car, he has been unable to work and cannot sustain himself or his family. Pepito has never been to school, his children have never attended school.
This month we were blessed with a special offering for Peptio, to buy clothes and food for his family. Sis. Flor has agreed to purchase all items and deliver them personally to Pepito and his family.

There are many poor in the Philippines and we cannot help them all, but when we can give to one of our brothers who is standing for the truth of the gospel of Christ and help alleviate his suffering just a little we want to try knowing that we will be blessed, it is more "blessed to give than receive."

The Abu Sayyaf kidnapped yet another victim yesterday, a college president, click HERE. The Abu Sayyaf, known as the "sword of God" is a muslim separatist group, believed to have only 400 members is the most violent group of terrorists in the Philippines. They are responsible for many kidnappings and several beheadings in the southern part of the Philippines. They are active in Mindanao, Basilan and Jolo. Today gunman took 57 hostages in the Philippines, later releasing 17 of the childeren. They are believed to be a group of bandits who were former memembers if a militia. They have been pursued by authorities in the past few days following a gunbattle. As a follow up to the "peace" negotiations. They representatives of the Philippine government and the MILF released a statment saying that they hoped a deal could be brokered by April. Obviousely, looking ahead of the end of the current Philippine President in May, the next Philippine President might not be as willing to work with the MILF. The Muslim population makes up only about %5 of the total population of the Philippines, the vast majority is Roman Catholic. The Roman Catholic majority is concerned about control of the land. The area of land under dispute is seen in the map in darker color. Most of the violence, kidnappings and bombings, have occured in the areas marked as "automomous" regions, particularly the Sulu archipelago.

In related Philippine news, the Philippine government announced the what they believe is the complicity of 161 people in the massacre of a rival political clan. The Ampatuan family is believed to have been behind the massacre of 57 people, 30 of them journalists. The party was on their way to register to be on the ballot in the coming elections in May. The place of the massacre is in the Muslim controled province of Maguindanao, martial law has been declared for the region giving the police greater powers to detain and try to restore order.

Peace Talk?

The Philippine governement and members of the MILF (Moro Islamic Liberation Front) have once again started "peace talks." The meetings are being brokered by the Malaysians. The Muslim "separatists" or terrorists, have faught for independance for decades and it is estimated that 120,000 have been killed in the violence, much of which has happened in Mindinano.

Please pray that the will of the Lord be done for the Kingdom of God to be established. I remember Benjamin Netanyahu saying that it is not possible to negotiate with people who were dedicated to your destruction and who did not believe you have the right to exist.

Foreign Workers

Many Filippinos have to work outside of the Philippines. It sounds very strange to American ears but many times it is not possible to earn a living on two full-time incomes in the Philippines. The fact is that the whole family has to work to provide food for the table. For that reason many choose to work and live overseas and send money back home to their family, even up to %75 of their salary. And it is not like they can jump a plane home for the weekend, many who live oversees and work for their family have not seen them in years. They make this sacrifice for the lives of their childeren, so that they can have food and an education.

Many of the overseas workers live in Dubai. Dubai is considering restructure of its foreign debt and since the industry is state owned it may force job cuts. One governmentmental department of the Philippines predicts %50 of the funds coming from overseas will be eliminated, over 300B.

November 26, 2009 Efren Peñaflorida CNN Hero of the Year

Tonight a Filippino was honored with being the "hero of the year." Efren Penaflorida, 28, created a company called Dynamic Teen Company, where volunteers "bring the school" to the poor childeren who cannot afford to go to school. They literally have a pushcart of books and school supplies that they take to the slum areas and teach the childeren; reading, math, hygiene, and english.
In his acceptance speech Efren said there are heros all over the world of every color and shape, together we make a wonderful tapestry. He went on to say that there is a "hero" inside of each of us and that together we can change the world.

Forty-six murdered and state of Emeregency declared in Mindanao. The Philippines are having elections in May. Early reports seem to say that members of the Mangudadatus family were murdered by the Ampatuan family, both familys are powerful clans. The Mangadadatus's were in a convoy to register for the elections, the men of the family were not in the convoy, reasoning that the women would not be harmed. However, many women were murdered, one was pregnant, and several journalists were murdered as well. It has been reported that some had their hands were tied behind there back and were shot in the head.

Clinton visits Philippines

The US Secretary of State is visiting the Philippines and has urged that a peace deal be made between the Philippine government and the MILF. She said the be current Philippine president should be the one to make such a deal because she will be out of office in June. However, she said that it should be a legal treaty; the current president made a deal with the muslim rebels that was declared unconstitutional by the Philippine supreme court.

Good news out of the Philippines. A break-away group from the MILF released the Catholic Irish priest they had kidnapped more than a month ago. He was quoted as saying the captors treated him very well, thank the Lord for that. In contrast, to the beheading of a school teacher last week.

The priest said he was fed sandwiches twice a day with a "special spead" that was just for him. He is talking about a sandwich spread that is sold in the stores. When I was in Valencia they bought this "special" for me. One of the cooks thought it was mayonnaise, saying, "Americans like Mayonnaise?" Actually, it was Ceasor salad dressing! LOL. But there are several different kinds of the sandwich spread, all that I sampled tasted very good.

I took this photo in Valencia, Buikidon. It was a small community on the outside of Valeancia city proper. The road led to a mountain region where there was bannana trees and sugar cane. This is taken from the porch of Edward Suarez, he is an owner of a sugar cane field. There were many people walking down this road and traveling by motorcycle. I was an "attraction" for the young people, many had never seen a "white" except on television.

Sad news out of the Philippines, the BBC is reporting that a teacher who was abducted 3 weeks ago has been murdered.

The area of this violence is the island of Jolo. It is part of the Sulu archipelago, located to the SW of Mindano, but under governmental control of Mindanao.

Please pray for peace in the area, and for the critical elections coming this May to the Philippines.

One might think that our ministry to Philippines is over since we are back in the US.
But I am still in almost daily contact with many of the people I met there. Recently, I spoke with one of the young people and explained "speaking in tongues" and what it means to be baptized with the Holy Ghost. Many of the youth are hungry for the deeper things in God and they need a teacher.
Please pray for our need to provide teaching materials to the youth of the Philippines, they need to know about the Holy Ghost, healing and the greater works of God.

New Healing reports from the Philippines

Great news from the Philippines. Flor Capilitan emailed me today with news from the Initao church of Pastor Lumbab. She also reported news about the baby with a tumor, (I posted in an earlier post) and about her nephew. Here is her email when she writes about the miracles,

"From Pastor Lumbab Church located at initao. A child was healed from the wound caused by fungus without applying medicine that through your prayer alone the child wound was healed testified by pastor lumbab. Two babies from the church pastored by pastor saluna was healed from sickness one is that having tumor at the back of her head i personally met the child and the grandmother........My nephew got healed from swelling of both feet & legs(beriberi)my mother got healed from back ache and shoulder without applying medicine praise the Lord for the instant help.We have motto" sa hirap ng panahon ngayon bawal magkasakit"(due to difficulties avoid sickness)."

Praise the Lord for these healing reports! All glory to the Lord.

Shabach, Church of Jesus Christ Cagayan De Oro

This is the Church of Jesus Chirst in Cagayan De Oro. Cagayan is a city on the northern part of Mindanano. This church is in a village in the city, but there are no roads leading to this church. There is a path that you wallk inbetween the houses. This path opens up to a small lot on which that this church is being built. It is only about 10% complete but that does not prevent the saints from meeting. It is pastored by Pastor Barrero. He is pictured below standing by me in the red shirt.
The day I visited this church the Lord led me to teach the people about Shabach. Shabach is a hebrew word for "praise" that means to shout to the Lord with an "earsplitting sound." As soon as I showed the people to shout at the top of their voice and sing praises, they began to shout and praise. The Spirit fell and soon the people began to praise the Lord with zeal. The Spirit took over and I eventually lost the service to the Holy Ghost. I finally sat down and let them praise the Lord.
There is no sound system. The only music is a guitar.
I had a DVR and recorded the message, it was able to pick up most of the praise. It is inspiring to listen to the Philippino to praise the Lord with such zeal, and fire of spirit.

Below are pictures of the house church called Jesus Chirst Great God of the World church. This church is several miles farther out from the Church pastored by pastor Suluna. It is very far out in the jungle mountain area. This church is pastored by pastor Jalagat. The day we were there was very hot, but the Lord met us. We sang and worshiped the Lord together and then prayed for every person there. Pastor Jalagat had 10-15 young people there, they were very shy however none refused prayer.
After the meeting we went to another room in the hose and took our lunch. There was fish and rice and roasted bannana. And we had more the sweet coconut milk drink Fellowship was good with much singing and Love of God.

Here is the Church of Jesus Christ in the mountains near Initao. I wrote about this church in an earlier post called "the story of Pepito." There was a baby here who had a very bad tumor on the back of its head. I was told it was caused my malunutrion.

I just got an email from the Philippines with a report that the baby was healed at our prayer of faith. No medicine was applied.

Sis Flor writes,

"Praise the Lord! Pastor Winston and I just arrive from Initao to met the child and all the ministers. The child was completely healed from tumor without applying medicine just through your prayer the baby got healed."

As I have told this story, several people have asked about how they can help this family. Sis Flor writes that this family of 5 can survive on a bag of rice for 2000 pesos a month or $40, formula for the baby is 1,900 and vitamins are 399, for a total of about $92.

If you are interested in helping with this family please contact me. Sis Flor will buy the food directly and distribute and provide reciepts with signatures of the recipients. Every dollar will go to feed the hungry, 100%.

This lake is a "rift lake" formed by plate subsidence related to movement along earthquake fault lines and is about 26 meters deep. There was a little hut that was built on the water. We sat on the hut and had a relaxing afternoon, eating maurung, before visting the famiiles that make up an outreach church in this mountain area.

When I was in Valencia I taught a leadership conference. There were 29 leaders who attended.
I taught them the basic doctrine of one-God and that his name is Jesus Christ. I taught that prayer, baptism, and salvation is in the name of Jesus Christ. That was on a Monday, on Thursday this pastor went to lake Apo with me. He told me that I had "changed his life." That he knew that he had to add the "anointing" (Christ) to his prayers. He said is was going to always pray in the name of Jesus Christ!

This is Will.

He was a confirmation for me. I divided my 20 days in the Philippines between Iligan and Valencia. I was in both places for about a week, not counting travel days. I first had planned to leave the country from Valencia. But after spending a week there, I felt that I should cancel my final speaking engagement at the church of Pastor Benito and return to Iligan. Several factors made up this decision...but it was personally hard for me to cancel a meeting so I struggled with the decision. This was the first time I was traveling "on my own" without and escort. When I got on the bus to travel to Iligan, this young man sat next to me and began to ask me who I was...they all understand the word "missionary" so I told him I was a missionary. He asked me what church and I told him "non-denominational but Christian." I said we believe in Jesus Christ and I preach "Jesus Christ the same yesterday, today and forever." He said, "Oh so you are Apostolic, so am I." I knew he was not talking of an "apostolic denomination" like we have in America, but that he believed in Ac 2:38baptism. We talked for about an hour about the oneness of God and the "truth."

Of all the thousands of people I could have sat by on this journey...God allowed a fellow brother and believer in Jesus Christ to sit next to me.

He got off at a stop before I did and left me with the words, "see you in the Kingdom my friend and brother."

Pastor Jered took me to a small village in Valencia. We visited the home of Edward Suarez, he owns a field of sugar cane. This picture was taken in his back yard. He had a Rambutan tree and when he found out I liked the taste of Rambutan he wanted to give me some from his tree. The fruit was ripe at the top of the tree but we could not reach it. So Christian was hailed from the street and promised some fruit if he would climb the tree and pick me some ripe fruit.

Rambutan is white, sweet and has the texture of a grape, it is about as big as a large grape.

This is Nilson. He was a good friend to me when I was in Valencia. He is an English major in college and has just finished his final exams. He helped translate to me what people were saying and he knew English word origins. I told him he should teach me English! We discussed regional english and regional expressions. I tried to explain to him about the south and our drawwwwwlll. I don't know if I got "ya all" over to him.

We had a lot of fun talking about such phrases.

Nilson has studied leading in worship and the whole team in Valencia is held together by him.

His life consists of school and church. He goes to the church every Saturday and practices with the band. Then all day in Sunday worship. Whenever I asked about where Nilson lives I was always told, "it is very far." ?? So considering how the Philippino must travel I know it is a great sacrifice for him to get to the church both Saturday and Sunday.

Most memorable thing about him was the Sunday that I preached "Jesus Christ" as the salvation name. Nilson got up and was leading in worship as I was praying for the people and he started singing, "I belong to Jesus Christ...Jesus Christ is my God...Jesus Christ is my Saviour." He received a seed of the word of the gospel of "Jesus Christ" and that was worth all to make my journey to Valencia.

Pray for Nilson as he seeks God's will for his life.

David Adrales and Heidi

This is David and Heidi. They live in Valencia. She leads in praise and worship at the Jesus for all Missions Church, she is a front singer and has great stage presence.
When we did the open air meeting in a province about our hour motorcycle ride outside of Valencia David and Heidi drove a motorela and took many of our team to the site. David plays the guitar and sings, he has a very good voice. David has a great heart and passion for God. He is always smiling and has leadership potential. He is praying for direction for his life and wants to always serve the Lord. He and Heidi plan on being married at some date in the future.

When I took this picture David was moving and the digital camera I had required a few seconds of no movement or the picture would be blurry. I told David they were all bad pictures and if he wanted me to get a good one he would have to sit still and pose. When the Philippino put their hand under their chin like David is doing it is saying, "I am handsome!"

This is Jimuel and his little brother Jimboy.
Their father died when Jimuel was five, and Jimboy 3. They do not remember him and have never seen a photograph of him. Their mother remarried and their step father could not afford to raise these two boys, if I remember correctly they told me their was then 7 children. So he left them with their grandmother. This is a common story in the Philippines. She lives in Iligan City and is very poor and she thought that the boys would be better cared for in the orphanage. They have lived there for the last 3 years. The first Sunday I was in Valencia I opened my Bible (gold page, leather bound, etc). Jimuel commented and said, "beautiful Bible." I noticed that Jimuel was reading from a Gideon Bible. I asked him if it was his Bible and he said, "No sir, I have no Bible." It hurt my feelings to think that he did not have his own personal bible, so I gave him the pesos to buy a bible. He asked me to sign it for him and I took his picture. From that momemnt on we were friends...he brought me hot coffee every morning, washed my clothes, and climbed the volcano with me. If there was any way possible, I would bring him and his little brother to America to live.

Jimboy plays the guitar. It is a cheap china made guitar but he makes it sound like a "martin." He is a pretty good singer and will sing harmony with his brother. They love to sing worship music by Hillsong and Don Moen.

When I got there they told me that he was mentally retarded and that he had a skin disease. I looked at his skin and he had 3 ringworms, one on his arm and the others on his legs. He was not being treated and the ringworm was as big as a silver dollar. That night I went to the Pharmacy and bought the anti-fungal cream and asked that it be put on the boy twice a day. He was a lot better 1 week later when I left but was still not cured. I think that if he were in America we would say he was "autistic." And that he had behaviour problems...maybe ADD. We would get him some special education classes and send him to school. But that is not an option in the Philippines, unless you pay, it is very expensive for them. So Johnjohn...is just existing; not being educated or properly cared for. He will forever be at the mercy of those around him.
He has only a mother, who lives many hours away, his father is dead. His mother is remarried and cannot care for Johnjohn. She abandoned him at the orphanage. The night I arrived he tried to tell me his story and sat on the dirty concrete floor and cried for an hour. I could not understand him...except for the word, "momma."

The day before I left the Philippines I want to Cagayan De Oro, my flight left at
9AM and Cagayan is at least a two hours bus ride from Iligan, so we had to get a hotel.
I saw the traditional dress of the Philippine men, it is called a Baroung. The traditional one is white and is wore with a white T-shirt underneath. Then they have this style that is pictured. I bought Pastor Winston and his Assistant Pastor Ernesto a Baroung.

Here is a beautiful family that attends the Church of Jesus Chirst Iligan. The childern call me Unle Bill. Sis Lois married a wonderful man and when they had children he wanted to provide them with the best life possible. So he did what many many Filipino men do, he took a job overseas. That means he cannot visit his home but one time a year. His children have only seen him a handful of times. But he is a good provider for them and his wife. He lives in Malaysia, I spoke to him on the phone...but his English was not good enough for me to understand. But he was trying to thank me because his wife had received a miracle when I prayed for her. Two weeks later I saw and heard her crying and thanking God for giving her this healing.

Just before I left the Philippines I wanted to give this beautiful family a gift. Because their father makes such a huge sacrifice for his family they are able to afford a few things that other Filipinos will never be able to buy, they have a telephone and have Internet in their home. So I gave them enough US $ to buy an MP3 player. Lovelychristin was my interpreter for many trips and helped me in many ways, she helped me carry some of my equipment and watched it for me during meetings and while we traveled. She, Johnbronson and their mother were a great blessing to me.

She was the first to teach me of the Philippine custom of taking an elders hand and placing it on the forehead of the children. This is their way of showing respect to the elders. As soon as she saw me she grabbed my hand and placed it on her forehead and said that this was their custom and "welcome elder Bill."

Mayor "Jose" Catarata

This is the mayor of the City of Valencia. He invited us to come and meet with him. We discussed how that the church of Jesus Christ could partner with the government to advance the lives of the people. In the video he stated that he believes that people need to put God first in thier lives and he said that we need to reinforce that thru the church and government. He is a very wise man, well educated and speaks english very well. He invited me to return for a city wide crusade and said the schools would be open for us to speak in, teaching the childeren the dangers of drugs and crime. After we made this short video we prayed together and asked God for his guidance. The mayor requested prayer for wisdom to lead the city. He views himself as a "father" to the people and is very concerned about thier quality of life. He wants to bring the city forward with new laws that will better the lives of the people.

Flooding in Manila

Several people are asking me about the flooding in Manila.

While I was there I missed the worst of the storm. I was on Mindanao Island, about 400 miles to the south of Manila. The island that Manila is on was was worst hit by the storm. One of my good friends in Valencia, Nilson, emailed me that he read that the flooding is not expected to dry until December, the ground is so wet and this is the rainy season.

Story of Pepito

To understand Pepito you must understand the extreme poverty of many in the Philippines and where he lives. It is a mountainous region nearest to Initao in Northern Mindanao. Initao is a small town between Cagayan De Oro and Iligan City. Cagayan is on the northern most edge of the Island.

Here is a picture of Cagayan at night.

By traveling about 70KM south out of Cagayan along the coast you will pass thru Initao and eventually reach Iligan City.

To get to where Pepito lives you must travel north from Initao about 15 miles and then turn east and begin to climb up the mountain for about 15-20 miles. The view is beautiful, there are coconut trees and sometimes the road will curve and you will see the ocean on the horizon.

The day we traveled here was beautiful. We hired a "jeepney" to drive us as far back as he could, there were about 15 of us who made this journey. The road was very bumpy and hard to drive on. It was extremely hot but all were glad for the cool breeze in our faces from the moving jeepney. Eventually the jeepney came to a stop and we began to walk down another road. It looked as if we would walk about a half mile down a very steep road. About 2/3 of the way to the bottom we turned off the road and walked up a foot-path. We walked about 50 yards and it opened up into a clearing. What I saw with my eyes was a scene of horror. There were many people who were sick. Some had TB, and were skin and bone. I knew if they did not get a miracle that day....they would not live another week.

I hope I describe the remoteness of where we were at...it was miles and miles from the nearest ANYTHING. The Filipinos do not own cars. They are much too expensive for them to own and gas is about 33 pesos a liter, over $4 a gallon. They simply cannot afford to buy a car and to keep gas in it. Therefore, the whole nation commutes. There are jeepneys (long truck like vehicles with benches that will seat about 25), motorela, motorcycles, and bicycles with side cars. All charge a few pesos to ride, more for a longer distance.

Pepito and his family live so far out in the mountains that they must walk to every place they need to go, and then hire some sort of transportation. When they survive on a few pesos a month...it can become so expensive they cannot make the journey.

Many in Iligan City want to attend church each week but they cannot afford the fare.

Here are a couple of the pictures of the huts that are Pepito's home and house church pastored by his father, Pastor Mario Saluna. The family sleeps in a loft above the church.

Filipinos love to serve their visitors food. They will prepare the best dinner they can afford. The day we visited Pastor Saluna he did not have food for us, instead he gathered coconuts and served them. I drank fresh coconut water for the first time. When I was leaving the church Pastor Saluna gave me a roster. It was his best offering, I received it like it was a thousand dollars...to him it was.

I prayed for all the people there. There were several who had TB and many who had other diseases that are caused by mal-nutrition, I saw a baby with a large tumor on the back of its head. There was a young man playing a cheap made in China guitar. It was about a $5 guitar but somehow he made good music, they played and worshiped God for an hour.

When I finally had the chance to pray for Pepito the Lord told me to anoint him for the ministry. I got out my anointing oil and put it on his head and pulled off his shoes and socks and anointed his feet. We cried and prayed together. Pepito cannot speak English. The schools are free for children, but if they cannot get to them because they are too far to walk, or if they have to try to sell to earn money for rice, then they will not be in school. Pepito has not learned English, so he has not been able to be in school. I was talking to him thru an interpreter. I wanted so badly to give him something. My bible, no he cannot read English. My MP3 player, no, he does not have a computer. So I gave him a new handkerchief as an anointed cloth. I told him to keep it as a memorial for the day he was anointed to preach and to remember that he has a spiritual father, who loved him like a son and would be praying for him. He cried and was thanked me for praying for him. He had broken his leg and the pin was coming out...but the government will not operate on him a second time, they would have to pay before the operation.

I prayed for him that the pin would be dissolved and that God would give him a miracle so that he would be able to walk.

Pepito began to talk.....
He told me thru the interpreter that he had been approaced by two organized churches. One said they would give him a house and cow if he joined them. Another told him that if he would join them they would send him to school. But he told me, "there is only one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of us all." I told him, "what shall it profit a man if he gain the whole world and lose his own soul." He said that he would not compromise the "gospel of Jesus Christ" for money. He told me that he had preached one time before, and that he was going to start preaching again, but being hit by a car and breaking his leg had prevented him from being able to walk to go preach.

Pray for Pepito. The last report I heard was that he and other members of Pastor Saluna's church and been able to travel to Iligan and give testimony of the many miracles they received while I was with them. I pray that Peptio is preaching the Word with power and that his leg is well. My prayer is that I see him again soon.

Finally, back in the US. I arrived on Wednesday 30, at 8:30 AM. I had to spend all night in JFK. My plane arrived there at 8:30 PM and my connecting flight did not leave until 6:10 the next morning. Not enought time to get a taxi, hotel and get back up by 4:00AM to get to the airport. Just four-five hours in an expensive NY hotel is not worth the cost....so I slept for a whole hour! on a seat terminal 4 leaning against a concrete post.
Yesterday I finally started to get over the jet lag...but the Charlotte pollen started to get to me. This morning I am fighting a sinus headach....but all in all feel really good.

I will begin to update and post about the people of the Philippines. They are wonderful, hospital, and humble people. I want to write about many of the people I met and document about the many churches that I ministered in.

Valencia Meetings

"No whites in many years!"

The last two nights I conducted open air meetings on a concrete pad that they use to dry rice. We hung a tarp and lights and set up a small stage. The first night it was raining, and threatening rain, but we still had about 125 people. The older elders said that it had been many years since a white missionary had visited their area. I ministered on Jesus Christ the same yesterday today and forever, Heb. 13:8. Then I prayed for their healing. There were so many miracles...female conditions, deaf ears, one eye that was almost blind, back/shoulder pain, babies with diseases that I have never heard of before (caused by malnutrition), ect. As I began to pray there were so many people that I could not interview each of them about what their disease was. People started to come from everywhere. They were sitting in their homes listening and then they came out for prayer. I am sure I prayed for 200 people that first night. They began to fall under the power of God and were laying on the wet concrete. The only church in the area is Catholic and 7th Day Adventist (they are huge in the Philippines), so this was very new to the people.
The second night, last night, I ministered in John 1:1. At the end I asked for new converts who had never accepted Jesus Christ in their life before. We recorded 29 names that came forward, one little lady was 81 years old, and there were 3 teenage boys. They were crying and confessing their sins...No doubt that revival had come to the people. Giving all the glory to God. This coming Saturday I will be baptising in a pool in the name of Jesus Christ!

Great news from the Capalitians. They are proud parents! Yeah. Samuel was born on Sept. 20, (I forget the time, but early in the morning) He was 7# 4 oz. Bro. Winston is very happy...I spoke with Flor yesterday and she was still in the hospital but was expected to go home soon.

Good Morning All, I need to give you a quick update. I have completed the first phase of the trip and have traveled from Iligan City where I spent a week with Pastor Winston and Sis Flor. On 9/12 I traveled to Plaurdilla and preached in pastor Ben Sosa's church. He has a church across the road from the ocean. Very beautiful. There were many childeren there, they have a choir and sang for me. The Pastors wife has a wonderful spirit as she leads the childeren. He has two childeren, a boy and girl, both in college.
On 9/13 I preached in the Church of Jesus Christ in Iligan City. There were many visiting pastors there. I met many wonderful people and several people received miracles. I prayed for the baby of Sis Flor and believe that God will use him in a special way. He is due on the 9/23.
I preached in 4 churches on 9/14. There were many miracles. The churches were Pastors; Lumbab, Delano, Saluna, Jalagat. I will have to post more of the events of that day....they are stories all by themselves.
My time with Bro Winston and Sis Flor was unforgettable. They are real servants of Jesus Christ and are living in a dangerous area for the gospel of Jesus Christ. Please pray for their safety and for the work.

Last Thursday I traveled to Valencia. I got news that my lost baggage would arrive the next morning back in Cagayan so on Friday morning pastor Jered and myself traveld back to the airport. But the bag did not arrive from Manila. Customs held up the bag. After several calls and paperwork...not to mention the fact that I left my ID in Valencia...I was able to get Manila to send the lost bag. The next flight they could send it on was the next day, Saturday. So I had to spend the night in Cagayan De Oro. It is a dangerous city for foreigners traveling by themselves, but pastor Jered had a friend there with a very nice house by Philippine standards. We stayed with the Moralas family and I was thankful for the fish and rice for supper. The young boy in the house, Nick, 23, cooked for me and took very good care of pastor Jered and myself. Except for the near motorcycle wreck on the way to the internet cafe'!!
Saturday brought my bag from Manila and I traveled back to Valencia. We had normal Sunday services and yesterday I preached a leaders conference where there were 29 pastors. I taught for 1 hour and they wanted me to continue...so we took a break and I taught for another hour. They kept wanting more teachning...so after a second break I taught them for another hour and then laid on hands and prayed for everyone. It was an awesome time.
Tonight we have a "salvation Crusade" in a village about an hour from here.....Then more meetings the rest of the week. But all is not work, tomorrow morning I will find the time to climb a Volcano before the first meeting!! My new Philippine friend Jimeuel has promised to climb with me!

Made to Seoul. My bags were delayed. They did not get out of NY.!! Arrggg. I guess I will have to be content with my carryon for another day.
I am in airport and at 4:30 am their time, the only thing open is a drink concession and the internet cafe'. Thus I can post.
My flight for Manila leaves at 8:30AM. Nothing to do until then. I am hungry...maybe I have an oatmeal bar! ...LOL.

I packed my bags tonight. Weight limit is 50#. I weighed my first bag at 80#! That is only a $100 fine! LOL. Oh well, I had to repack everything 3 times. I finally have a carry on that I was not going to take, but you are allowed up to 40# in a carry on. I should be 5-10 #s underweight on each bag. Whew!
Anyway all ready to go.
I checked international rates with verizon. Try $2.89 a min. NOT. I will stick with an ATT calling card at 80 cents a min.
